 About the blog

On my blog, I strive to offer fresh perspectives on developing the crafts of fiction and dramatic writing and the imagination which surrounds these crafts, and not just for the aspiring writer. The experienced writer struggling to master a new genre or writing format (the short story, for example) may well find some useful tips amongst my topics. Subjects include the trickiness of writing the children’s short story, character development for the short story, developing original short story ideas to developing an original fantasy idea, what is meant by original genre fiction and who best to critique your writing. Some posts, such as who decides what makes a great children’s story or what makes Roald Dahl such a successful children’s writer can be enjoyed by the general reader interested in children’s fiction. Check out the archives for more titles.

Something about me

I remember one time as a child I stood in a large, deep cavern that echoed my voice in a way I had never experienced before. I remember standing for quite some time, shouting out many words and thinking how wonderful and thrilling but also strange and eerie to hear those deep cavern walls throwing my words back at me so clearly yet also mysteriously, especially my name and little secrets about me.

Well, the story is an echo, too; a powerful and artistic echo of human emotion. Stories echo our ambitions and struggles, our loves and hates, our courage and fears, our weaknesses and strengths, our failures and successes. To put it more succinctly, stories echo all that we are and all that we desire to be.

I never grow tired of shooting out words and hearing them echoed back at me, feeling the wonder and the thrill of it, yet at the same time feeling how strange and eerie it all is to hear my ideas and secrets thrown back at me from the enigmatic depths of the story. Just like when I was a child making my voice echo off the deep cavern walls. That is why I write and will always write!

One of the best things I gain from this blog is feedback. It is obvious that a writer wants to know what his readers think of his work. Your opinions may well help me improve my posts, or even inspire a fresh post entirely.

One Response to About Jerry Dunne

  1. I’m on my second reading of your book “How to Write Children’s Short Stories. It is packed with so much good information that I have begun to think of it as my bible. Jerry, the part about attitude in the chapter on character was a light bulb over my head moment! I’ve read a multitude of books on writing but that nugget is brilliant. It is also unique, I’ve not read it in any other book. I want to give it a ten star rating but they only allow for five on Amazon. Thank you sooo much for writing it.
